FACTS
  • Undaria pinnatifida is a brown seaweed native to Japan, northern China, and Korea.
  • It invaded southern California in 2000, and quickly spread northward, reaching Monterey Harbor in August 2001.
  • Invasive species, such as Undaria, spread beyond their native range and into new habitats.
  • In many cases, humans have unintentionally facilitated the spread of invasive species.
