Megascleres with microspined heads. |
| | Tedania (Tedania) sp. A
(Green & Bakus, 1994) |
Sponge:
Tubular.
Consistency: fragile.
Surface: smooth.
Oscula: not visible.
Color: Tan. ? Alive.
Spicules: Megascleres:
(1) Strongyle-Styles with microspined heads:
240 -266-300- 345 µm.
x 8 - 9- 10 µm.
(2) Tylotes:
160 -196-211- 236 µm.
x 4 -5- 5 µm.
Microscleres:
(1) Onychaetes (Microspined Microxeas):
49 -57- 65 µm.
x 2 -3- 3 µm.
(2) Onychaetes:
135 -168- 208 µm.
x 2 -3- 3 µm.
Skeleton:
Ectosome: Thin dermis with Tylotes.
Choanosome: Strongyles in tracts and singly; Onychaetes occur in bundles.
Distribution: Southern California.Santa Maria Basin.
Depth: Deep water, 92-100 m.
Note: Strongyles apically asymmetrical and may be confused for Styles. See pg. 113 A. Was Tedanione sp. A.

[B]
Megascleres without microspined heads.
|
| | Tedania (Trachytedania) toxicalis
de Laubenfels, 1930 |
Sponge:
Massive to 3 cm high.
Consistency: soft, fragile.
Surface: superficially smooth with numerous "cavities".
Oscula: not readily made out because of the presence of these cavities.
Color: Alive: brownish-red, Preserved: Pale drab.
Spicules: Megascleres:
(1)Styles - Subtylostyles (occasionally with small spines):
212 -230- 255 µm.
(2)Tylotes - Subtylotes:
181-194- 224 µm.
(see note).
Microscleres:
(1)Originally described as having Rhaphides:
150 µm.
x 0.67 µm.
(2)but has Onychaetes of two sizes:
60 µm.
x 0.75 µm.
(3)Onychaetes:
180 µm.
x 1.8 µm.
Skeleton:
Ectosome: Fleshy dermal membrane with tangentially placed Tylotes -Subtylotes.
Choanosome with spicules in confusion and a few vague tracts.
Distribution: Central California.
Depth: Intertidal.
Note: Onychaetes not shown. There are extreme diferences in spicule sizes which range from those given above to those of Hartman, 1975 [Styles Mean 300 µm, Tylotes Mean 220 µm and two size classes of Onychaetes]. T. toxicalis was synonymized with Kirkpatrickia topsenti by Bakus, 1966, which was in error.
